Houston Diairies : Down House - The memorable restaurant!

Between my last blog and this, I’ve had a roller coaster of life-changing events. I’m not whom I started out to write as, which is a good thing because now I can be adventurous and dramatic like the way I had wanted to be.
Let’s just say, “it’s not that my standards are too high, it’s just that my father has set an amazing example for how a man should treat me”.

Fast-forwarding the mind boggling fiasco, my aunt and elder brother called me straight down to Texas for some change of air! The landing announcement to Houston after 14-something hours was as soothing as hugging my mom after four months, but I’m not going to lie – Qatar Airways made my journey absolutely wonderful!

Besides the limitless pampering by the entire family, I was treated to the finest of restaurants and cuisines. Grateful for being a part of a line of food-lovers, and I’m even luckier to have a chef brother!

On my second night in town, we decided to have dinner at Down House, a restaurant that my brother works in as a line cook. I obviously chose the day he was on duty, so I could take the customer advantage of sending sarcastic compliments to my darling chef. Hah!
Situated on Yale Street, Houston, Down House has a very casual and comfortable feel to it. We walked into a softly lit pub decorated with vintage, yet classy furniture and were greeted by an extremely welcoming staff member. The weather was absolutely beautiful so we chose to sit outside.

The menus were already placed on the table, which our friendly server skimmed through with us. While we contemplated over what to order, I requested the server to inform “Chef Fahd” inside, of my arrival. Everything in the restaurant’s concise menu sounded particularly simple and appetizing and it actually became hard to choose!

For starters, we ordered the Mushroom on Toast and Lettuce Wraps.
I bit into the Mushroom on Toast with a burst of flavors filling my mouth from goat cheese to egg to the salty kick of soy sauce. What a well-blended display of mushrooms, I tell you. I don’t know if we were exceptionally hungry or what it was, because we gobbled down the generous serving within the first two minutes.

Mushroom on Toast
The lettuce wraps were DIY that were served with lettuce, grilled chicken, fried onions, cilantro and a Down House made sweet chili sauce. I smiled when the lettuce wraps came to our table because the first thing that caught my eye were the fried onions. Used in almost all Eastern dishes, freshly fried onions aka “tali hui pyaz” is a daily feature in every Pakistani home kitchen. I successfully assembled a non-breaking wrap for myself and thoroughly enjoyed the different flavors that were enclosed in a crisp leaf of lettuce.

Lettuce Wrap
Majority of the reviews about Down House raved about the Kimchi Burger, which is exactly what my uncle and I decided to order for ourselves.
I’ve often pondered over what I would do if I ever reached a point where I would have to choose between burgers or a life partner. This Kimchi Burger has given me my answer. A burger topped with an egg is already a treat; now imagine world-class kimchi layered between that and the melted slice of cheese. Boy, that was one heck of a party in my mouth I tell you. Every ingredient found its way to tickle my palette and the perfectly cooked patty made this brilliantly executed dish simply marvelous! Full points!

Kimchi Burger

My sister-in-law, the chef’s other half, ordered the Bistro Steak which came with a complementing sauce of Cilantro Raita! Hurray, more eastern variety!

Raita, FYI:

I absolutely loved this fusion surprise. Typically, the idea of steak is very sophisticated and is normally served with peppercorn or mushroom sauce, but this cilantro raita made it minty cool and totally fantastic to the tongue! Also, the medium steak was cooked perfectly.

Bistro Steak
My aunt went for the Chicken Fried Portobello. Sometimes you really don’t need meat, interestingly cooked vegetables can be just as tasteful and filling. Non-greasy, fresh, hot, crisp and delicious batter, with creamy and melt-in-the-mouth mashed potatoes on the side. Great choice.

Chicken Fried Portobello
Everything was served in pretty decent portions and I was so stuffed that I was expecting to see Homer Simpson opposite me if I stood in front of the mirror.
But what a meal it was, enjoyed every bit of it. I even sat there and expressed my dream to live in Houston so I could out here and hang out every single day! I get overexcited about things, okay?

Bummed that my brother was too busy in the kitchen and couldn’t come out to even say hello, I declined the dessert offer. Whad’ya know, the door opened and my sweetheart of a brother walked out with a plate of a beautiful brownie dessert topped with a candle. An early birthday surprise!!!!! Eek, I was shrieking like a little girl when everyone sang to me including Chef Fahd – I felt so special. I could tell he was a fidgeting to get back inside to work but there was no way I would let the chef get away without a selfie!

Chef Fahd - My bro <3

We devoured in the moist and unbelievably tasty, and hot brownie. So glad we got to have a dessert, I would have definitely missed out on it! Perfect way to conclude our meals.

Super sweet servers wished me a very happy birthday and we headed out home. Down House has to be one of my favorite restaurant experiences. Great food, wonderful ambience, efficient service and ofcourse awesome chefs ;)
Here’s a secret note that I asked to be delivered to Chef Fahd:

Thank you, God for all the amazing food and reminding me that love is all around me!

Easy Recipe : Mutton Ribs Karahi

5-Ingredient Mutton Ribs Karahi (mutton ribs cooked in a wok)

Feeling exotic, but don’t feel like going out?

Feeling a hearty meal, but not wanting to cook like an intense chef?

Feel like eating home cooked food, but not the average quick-fix-whip-up?

The only 3 added things you need for this FANTABULOUS recipe is a wee bit of patience for the cooking time, the appetite of a gorilla on crack, and sweat pants.

Courtesy: Self-Made Chef – My daddy the great!

 Prep Time: 7-10 mins
Cooking Time: 90 mins

Ingredients:

1 Tbsp            Red Chili Powder
2 Tbsp            Ginger & Garlic Paste
250gms Tomatoes (chopped)
250gms Yogurt
1.5 kg Mutton Breast & Ribs (Cut in cubes – with bone)
½ cup Oil
Salt (to taste)

Clockwise: Tomaotes, Red Chili Powder, Salt, Ginger-Garlic Paste, Yogurt, Mutton Breast & Rib piece
Method:

Allow the oil to heat up inside a karahi (wok), and add the ginger & garlic paste. After stirring for about 2 minutes, dunk the mutton pieces inside the wok to fry a little (till the color changes slightly).
Add the red chili powder and tomatoes. Let it rest for about 15-20 minutes before mixing in the yogurt and salt, then leave it to simmer on very low heat.
Let the ingredients cook until the meat is tender, and the oil separates.

Then?

Gobble those tender meat minions like a bolt and hashtag your stomach as #OverAndOut.

These were the condiments we served:

Carrots, Cucumbers, Lemon, Coriander, Slice Onions, Finely Cut Ginger
Enjoy.
Devour.
Indulge.

Elder Flower Summer Drink

If I were a permanent resident of Dubai, I would grow myself humps like them camels to store water for those desperate thirsty moments one gets in that desert.

My best friend recently moved there and she invited me over to her über talented sister’s house at Business Bay on a very humid Thursday evening.
Hira Sohail is a full time mum of very artistic nature. I could tell that as soon as I entered her cozy apartment with a very casual, yet chic layout. Besides her ability to decorate the interior of her home with an adorable and “pinteresty” concept, she also developed a thirst-quenching concoction to beat the heat of Dubai.
Just as I was cribbing about the weather, I was presented with the Elder Flower Summer Drink that pretty much put a brake to my never-ending rant.

Beautifully presented in a mason jar mug, as you will see, this drink was one of the most refreshing ones I’ve ever had and was after her life to give me the recipe that she was extremely kind enough to share! Instead of begging and pleading someone to make me a perfect, non-bitter tasting Mint Lemonade, I can now make this super easy summer drink myself with Elder Flower cordial.

Disclaimer: The pictures below are not stock pictures, but also a talent of this supermom and the one I actually drank – so it’s definitely going to look like this when you make it.

Without further ado, I present to you the ELDER FLOWER SUMMER DRINK

Ingredients:

2 tbsp Elder Flower Cordial
1 tsp   Honey (or more…if you prefer it like that)
250ml Perrier Sparkling Water (chilled)
A sprig of mint leaves
½ lemon
choice of fruits – Berries OR finely chopped apples/pears OR shaved cucumbers (This one had berries)

Method:

Mix the Elder Flower cordial, honey, and Perrier together (make sure it’s right before you serve, otherwise the fizz dies out). Squeeze in some fresh lemon juice, and dunk in the berries and mint. Serve, like a boss.
Drink – like a sheikh!

She scooped this up in 5-7 minutes to cater to my unannounced whiney visit, so I assume being slightly prepared should take about 3-5 minutes. Simple, fun, stimulating and easy! Try making this and share your results with us!

Dubai Diairies: Day 4 - Tom&Serg, you made my day!

Breakfast/Brunch are, hands down, my favorite mealtimes of a day. They’re also the meals I get to have the least because: Sleep over food - always! Unless you live in Pakistan where brunch is usually after 2 pm!
Admit it, you can’t ever get a spread like brunch. Waffles, pancakes, gazillion types of eggs, burgers (sigh), fruits, and basically a breakfast-ized variation of any food item.

Tom&Serg won our votes for a nice brunch out on Day 4 thanks to Zomato, which showed an average rating of 4.2!

The warehouse look of the restaurant instantly gave a casual feel and we were hurriedly seated to order the “A.M Food” before the clock struck 11.45am.

Obviously, since we don’t go anywhere without a party of less than a cult, there were a lot of palates and taste buds to satisfy and “a.m foods” in general, are quite personal and sensitive matters.

We were recommended their bestseller “Shakshouka Baked Eggs” which was definitely worth ordering. It was served fresh in a hot pan (straight out of the oven) consisting of eggs mixed with a rich, red sauce that was blended with a lot of herbs and spices. Very flavorsome.
Shakshouka Baked Eggs
The “Scrambled Eggs on Toast” was my favorite. I don’t really understand how people mess up a dish as simple as this (like me...), but it amazes me when they succeed in making it better than the best one you’ve had. Tom&Serg did that. Beautifully executed and presented.
Scrambled Eggs on Toast
“Two Eggs – Scrambled” served on toasted sourdough bread with veal bacon on the side was mysteriously different than the other scrambled eggs, but delicious nonetheless.
Everything tasted so simple, yet perfect. I especially appreciated the uniqueness that any ingredient can be removed from a recipe but not added, they were more than happy to serve it on the side though.
Two Eggs - Scrambled
We also ordered their gigantic Breakfast Wrap, which was dominated by Mexican flavors. The first bite told you how fresh it was made and the compatibility between flavors was brilliant!
Breakfast Wrap
The Eggs Florentine was one of the finest tasting one I’ve ever had. Even though the appearance was conventional, the rush of essences felt in every bite was mind-blowing.
Every item seemed to burst and melt in your mouth like a world-class molten lava cake.
Eggs Florentine
Could our table ever be deprived of a burger? YA THINK? Never!
I’m going to unwillingly admit that I didn’t have a bite of the Tom&Serg Burger, because with the fifty shades of eggs circulating inside my tummy, I really couldn’t have done it.
My uncle thought it wasn’t the best burger he has had, but their breakfast items really did raise our bar real high.
Tom&Serg Burger
Desi appetites do not touch the finish line without dessert. Our choices were Flourless Chocolate Cake, Blueberry Tart and the Tom&Serg Éclair.

Blueberry Tart, Flourless Chocolate Cake, Tom&Serg Eclair

The best out of the lot was the tart, very moist on the inside and perfectly tough around the outside.
The other two weren’t bad, but probably not good enough to remember. Maybe if they can eggo-nise a dessert? Hmm…
Blueberry Tart
Tom&Serg has a very friendly staff and one of the most creative places I’ve been to in Dubai. Their menu is simple, the recipes and presentation is phenomenal and to my surprise, I didn’t even miss fancy pancakes and waffles that I normally like to flirt with at brunches.

P.S: Orange Juice with eggs FTW
